Reflection for the month of August
It is in our most difficult moments that we come to know how much we are capable of. Those moments when we are faced with fear, pain or disappointment that at first seem insurmountable. I have tried to plan my way around them, often to reduce how much they might hurt. But recently I have come to realise that no planning can prepare us for what comes. It is simply through showing up everyday, that I have come to see real courage within me. As I keep walking, I encounter more of myself and am surprised at how much strength I actually have. It is through facing the fear, pain and disappointment, that I have come to truly see myself.
Poetry is the reason I am able to do this. I have found that writing is the act of listening to oneself, and the process of crafting words to create poems allows me to hold up a mirror to my life. It is this seeing that in turns gives us courage to keep walking. In Cape Town, the winter is slowly receding and while spring is still a month away, we can feel its tendrils already stretching to us. New beginnings are on the horizon, but if we are to meet them, we must start walking…
May August bring you courage to keep walking on whichever journey calls your heart at this time.
